Original Cup Template w/ Grille Tape

So I noticed a lot of the original cup cars painted around 2001-2004 have their grilles taped up. The Brian Simpson templates floating around have a tape layer but it's literally just a solid color rectangle over the grille. No detail or anything. Am I missing something here? Thanks in advance.
